In 1961 Nelson Mandela became leader of the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, which he co. founded. Mandela also raised funds for the ANC and arranged for paramilitary training of the group. Mandela held campaigns set forth to sabatage military and government targets. This caused him to prepare for any possible guerrilla attacks if the sabotage failed to end Apartheid.
